THE TIGERS FALL SHORT IN DOUBLE OVERTIME THRILLER

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. — Olivet Nazarene (IL) (13-8, 9-4) narrowly fell to Governors State (14-7, 10-3) with a final score of 81-80 in 2OT.

The opening half saw Olivet and Governors State engage in a closely contested battle. The Tigers managed to stay competitive throughout, with Keagen Holder and Andrew Bennett contributing key points to keep the team within striking distance. A pivotal moment occurred when Eli Edwards hit a jumper at the 59-second mark, narrowing the gap to just two points. The first half concluded with Olivet Nazarene trailing 28–26.

Olivet Nazarene showcased a strong performance in the second half, highlighted by a 6-point lead with 2:37 remaining, following a crucial 3-pointer by Mason Wood. Edwards consistently contributed, scoring multiple key baskets and closing the gap with Governors State. The back and forth second half ended in a 62-62 tie.

Holder's layup at 2:51 gave Olivet Nazarene a brief lead at 66–65, supported by Wood's assist. Governors State quickly responded, tying the score at 66 before regaining the lead. With just 6 seconds left, Wood connected on a clutch 3-pointer to tie the game with six seconds left in OT, forcing the game into a second overtime.

Wood spearheaded the Tigers in the extra session with two crucial 3-pointers, narrowing the gap to one point on two occasions, including at 2:53. Holder added a jumper, and Landen Hale contributed a layup with 38 seconds left to maintain pressure. Despite these efforts, the game concluded with Governors State edging out the Tigers 81–80.

Wood recorded his second double-double of the season with 21 points and 12 rebounds, converting five of 10 from beyond the arc. Holder scored 16 points and dished out nine assists. Edwards led the team in scoring with 23 points and added nine rebounds, making 11 of his 23 field goal attempts.

Olivet Nazarene is now 13-8 overall and 9-4 in conference play. Governors State stands at 14-7 overall and 10-3 in conference competition.
