ONU RECOGNIZES 10 SENIORS IN REGULAR-SEASON FINALE

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Between games of its final regular-season doubleheader against St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday afternoon, the Olivet Nazarene University baseball team recognized its 10 seniors.

Unfortunately, the Tigers dropped both games Saturday by scores of 9-3 and 13-4. This came after ONU fell 3-2 in extra innings at St. Francis Friday afternoon.

In Friday's game, Kainoa Mane pitched six innings, giving up three hits and one earned run. He also struck out five. Thomas Plizga was tagged with the loss, giving up just two earned runs over 3 ⅔ innings.

In the second inning, Robert Jackman got ONU in front early with an RBI groundout that plated Evan Pogioli. Two innings later, Garrett Mooney extended the Tiger lead with a safety squeeze bunt that got the speedy Donovan Yelle home to make it a 2-0 lead.

St. Francis would push across a run in the sixth and another in the ninth to force extras. They would win on a walk-off in the bottom of the 10th to seal the win.

The Fighting Saints (24-24, 19-8 CCAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Saturday's opener, but a big three-spot in the bottom of the third put ONU in front. Kai Hudson rocked an RBI double to get the Tigers on the board before an RBI groundout by Taylor Steig and a sacrifice fly by Geon Yoon had the Tigers up 3-2.

But that would be the last run the Tigers could muster before St. Francis plated seven unanswered runs to win 9-3 in the opener. Ethan Underwood pitched five innings in the loss.

In the regular-season finale, St. Francis scored runs in each of the first four innings to put ONU in a hole early. Steig roped a 2-RBI single and Mason Beatty smacked an RBI double to fuel a three-spot fifth inning to give the Tigers life, but the Fighting Saints added more runs in the next two innings to put things out of reach.

The Tigers ended the season with a 24-24 overall record and a 14-13 mark in the CCAC.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Tigers will enter the CCAC Tournament as the No. 7 seed, where they will take on No. 2 St. Ambrose in their opening matchup. Date and time to be determined - follow the Tigers at www.onutigers.com for updates on the postseason.
