OLIVET SWEEPS CALUMET TO OPEN THE CCAC SCHEDULE

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University baseball team (13-11, 3-0) opened up the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) by sweeping a three-game series over the Crimson Wave of Calumet (9-17, 1-4). The Tigers outscored CSJU 43-15 over the series and finished off the three-game set with their season opener hitting four home runs and combining for 17 RBIs in an 18-4 victory.


Taylor Steig kick-started the Tiger's offense on day one knocking in six RBIs and hitting home runs in back-to-back games. Three of the five runs batted in came by way of a three-run blast in the bottom of the second inning for the first game followed by a solo shot in the third inning of game two. It is the first time he has homered in back-to-back games this season and is riding the hot bat tallying four home runs in his last seven games.


Robert Jackman sparked off for a game-high and a personal season-high four RBIs in game two of the series. The senior outfielder recorded his first triple of the season to bring home three runs in the second inning and give ONU a lead they would not give up for the rest of the ball game. He followed up by hitting two doubles in the series finale going 4-7 from the plate in two games while scoring three runs on top of his five total RBIs.


Donovan Yelle, Kai Hudson, and Garret Mooney combined to cross Homeplate 17 total times in the series. Mooney topped the team with four runs in the third game, seven overall, and now totals 13 for the whole season. Team leader in runs, Hudson, added five more runs to his season total (24). The shortstop's best performance came in the final game hitting a home run and batting in three runs.

 

Geon Yoon, Noah Couch, Steig, and Hudson combined for all six long balls hit in the series. Couch hit multiple home runs for the first time this season clearing the wall twice in the third game of the series. Steig's two home runs make it four on the year. The team leader in home runs, Yoon recorded his sixth home run of the season and Hudson tallied his third this spring.

 

Ethan Underwood took the mound in the series opener taking credit for his sixth win of the year with six innings of work. Tommy Castro made his sixth appearance of the season tallying his third win, and striking out five batters in five innings pitched. Nolan Belschner took the mound for his seventh outing of the year recording his second win and striking out four in the final game of the series.
