TIGERS' DEFENSE PROPELLS ONU TO A 80-60 WIN OVER GSU

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University women's basketball court improved to 5-4 on the year and 4-2 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference after picking up an 80-60 win over Governors State Saturday afternoon. The Tigers' defense held the opposition to 60 points, a season-best for ONU, turned the Jaguars over 32 times and registered 18 steals. Olivia Demosthenes led the way with 21 points, four rebounds, and three assists for the contest.


Three different Tigers reached double digits in scoring for the game. Demosthenes poured in 21 points scoring more than 20 points in a game for the second time this season. Caroline Boehne finished with 17 points, 14 of which were scored in the second half. Bett O'Neal tallied 10 points reaching double digits in the total points column for the fifth time this year.


Maggie Cora set a new career-high with five swipes to lead the team. Jamie followed right behind tying a season-high with four and Brooklyn Marshall set a career-high with three. Nine different Tigers were credited with at least one steal on the day.

 

A back-and-forth first half witnessed seven tied scores and three lead changes. Demosthenes' six points in the first quarter gave the Tigers a six-point advantage after 10 minutes of play. GSU went on an 8-0 run in the early moments of the second quarter to level the score at 23-23 with 6:13 left. Kaitlyn Engle's three with only 51 seconds remaining in the half put the ONU up one as they entered the halftime break 32-31.


Olivet outlasted Governors State outscoring the visitors 22-15 in the third quarter and 26-14 in the fourth. The Jaguars took the lead for the fourth and final time at the 6:34 mark of the third period before four consecutive points from Boehne gave the Tigers the lead for good at 45-43. ONU kept up the intensity and ended the game with their largest lead of the day at 20 points.
