ONU DROPS CCAC-OPENING DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST USF

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Playing in their first two games of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate, the Olivet Nazarene University softball team fought hard but could not get enough offense to secure a win. The Tigers dropped the CCAC-opening doubleheader by scores of 9-1 and 2-1.

Both games saw ONU stay within striking distance throughout, keeping within two runs until a big USF inning late in the opener and dropping the nightcap by just one score.

After the Fighting Saints (14-8, 2-0 CCAC) jumped in front with a leadoff homer in the opener, the Tigers answered with a rally in their half of the first. Margaret Landis got aboard with a one-out single followed by back-to-back walks from Zoe Oshiro and Mallory O'Connor. Landis was then able to scamper home on a wild pitch to knot the score at 1-1 after the first frame.

USF, however, would tack on runs in the second, fourth, and sixth innings to end the game early in the sixth inning. Carissa Bombardiere, Landis, and O'Connor were responsible for the three Tiger hits. Allie Timm was tagged with the loss as the starter.

The Tigers kept pace with the Fighting Saints offensively in the nightcap. After surrendering two runs in the top of the first, ONU got on the board in the fourth to cut the deficit in half. Oshiro drew a lead-off walk swiftly followed by an O'Connor base hit up the middle. Avery Osborn laid down a sacrifice bunt to push both runners into scoring position before Gwen Bender lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Oshiro and make it a 2-1 ball game.

But that was where the score would deadlock as ONU could not get any more runs across to suffer the doubleheader sweep. Bombardiere and O'Connor both recorded multiple hits in the loss. Olivia Flinn was given the loss as the starter.

The Tigers will continue their conference schedule with a home doubleheader against Roosevelt Tuesday.
