ONU SETTLES FOR A SPLIT AT CALUMET ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON

WHITING, Ind. – The Olivet Nazarene University softball team hit the road for a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) doubleheader with the Crimson Wave of Calumet College of St. Joe at the Whiting Sports Complex on Friday afternoon. The Tigers slugged out 13 hits and won game one, 12-4, while the Crimson Wave scored four runs in the final two innings and took down the Tigers, 5-4.     

 

Game One: ONU 12, CCSJ 4 F/6

The Tigers turned to Kori Fricke to work game one of today's doubleheader.  Fricke went the distance and allowed eight hits, on four runs, and struck out a pair of batters.  The Tiger right-handed hurler earned her team-leading ninth win of the season. 

 

The Tigers cracked the scoring column in the first inning when Matti Lanie scored on an error by the third basemen.  The Tigers added to their lead in the second inning.  Fricke led off the inning with a towering home run to left-center field.  The Tigers led, 2-0.  With two outs, Margaret Landis singled and scored on an RBI triple by Lanie.  After Zoe Oshiro walked, Haley Dobson smacked a two-run double making the score, 5-0.  Megan Mann concluded the scoring for the Tigers as she smacked a single through the left side and made the score, 6-0. 

 

The Crimson Wave then scored three runs in the bottom of the second as they cut the Tiger lead in half at 6-3.   The Tigers extended their lead in the third inning.  With one out, Alyssa McCord and Faith Mikos singled.  Then, Mikos scored on a fielder's choice.  Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Dobson platted a pair of runs on a two-run single and Mann also dropped in her second run-scoring single of the day.  The Tigers extended their lead to 11-3.  After a quiet fourth, the Crimson Wave closed the gap to 11-4 on an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning.   

 

The Tigers tacked on another run in the sixth as they defeated the Crimson Wave, 12-4, in game one of today's doubleheader. 

 

Game Two: CCSJ 5, ONU 4

Head Coach Hannah Gardner sent out Emily Blucker to the circle for game two.  The Tiger right-hander worked six innings and surrendered three runs on nine hits, and fanned six batters.  Olivia Flinn came into the game in the seventh and gave up two runs and took the loss. 

 

The two teams found themselves in a pitcher's duel throughout.  The two teams combined for six hits and seven strike outs in the first four innings of play.  Oshiro and Margaret Landis were the only two hits for the Tigers through the first four innings and they were both singles.

 

The Tigers cracked the scoring column in the fifth inning.  With one out, Mikos singled and McCord doubled putting runners at second and third.  Margaret Landis shot single up-the-middle and platted both Mikos and McCord.  The Tigers led, 2-0.  Calumet cut the Tiger lead in half in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single to make the score, 2-1.  The Tigers tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.  Dobson led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a deep flyout by Mann.  Kate Landis then platted Dobson with a single.  Later in the inning, Mikos lined a run-scoring single through the left side and made the score, 4-1.

 

The Crimson Wave marked a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and the seventh as they defeated the Tigers in game two, 5-4.   

 

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Tigers return home for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16th as they host the nationally-ranked Cougars of Saint Xavier University.  The first game of the twin bill starts at 12 p.m.
