GARDNER NOTCHES 200TH CAREER VICTORY IN DAY THREE OF THE TIG SPRING GAMES

TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 9 Olivet Nazarene University softball team concluded the third day of the TIG Spring Games as they played the Blue Hawks of Dickinson State in game one, the Raiders of Northwestern College in game two and concluded the day against the Bulldogs of Concordia (Neb.). 

 

Game One: DSU 8, No. 9 ONU 7

The Tigers turned to Kori Fricke to start the first game of the day for the Tigers as she went the distance and surrendered eight runs on 10 hits and struck out three. 

 

The Blue Hawks cracked the scoring column first on an RBI double and an RBI groundout making the score, 2-0.  Dickinson State then added to its lead in the second marking three runs in the inning.  The Tigers found themselves trailing 5-0 early in the game.

 

 After the Blue Hawks tacked on another run in the third, the Tigers finally tried to chip into their 6-0 deficit.  Haley Dobson led off the inning with a double and Margaret Landis reached on an error.  The reigning CCAC Player of the Week Zoe Oshiro then smoked a double into right and platted both Dobson and Landis. The Tigers grabbed more momentum the bottom of the fourth.  After Kori Fricke led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Vannah Vaughan moved her over with a sacrifice bunt.  Matti Lanie then drove-in Fricke on a sacrifice fly.  Dobson then continued her strong game and homered to left to cut the game to 6-4.  Margaret Landis then tripled and scored on an error, making the score, 6-5.   

 

After the Blue Hawks scored a run on a passed ball in the fifth, making the score, 7-5, the Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the frame.  With two outs, Fricke cracked a two-run homer over the left field fence making the score, 7-7. 

 

The Blue Hawks scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning as they held on to defeat the Tigers, 8-7.   

 

Game two: NWC 15, No. 9 ONU 0 F/5

In game two, the Raiders jumped on Tiger pitching early and often as they marked four runs in the first and 11 runs in the fourth.  Margaret Landis, Megan Mann, and Alli Timm marked the lone hits for the Tigers as the Raiders took this contest, 15-0 in five innings. 

 

Game Three: No. 9 ONU 9, CUNE 2

The Tigers took on the Bulldogs in the final game of the day.  Fricke took the mound for her second start of the day.  The Tiger junior went the distance and surrendered five hits on two runs and fanned five batters. 

 

The Tigers jumped on the board in the first inning.  Dobson led off the frame with a double and Margaret Landis reached on an error.  Oshiro then drove in Dobson with an RBI single and Margaret Landis eventually scored on the play on an error by the Bulldogs.  Mann then extended the ONU lead to 3-0 on an RBI double to right.  Later in the inning, Fricke then platted Mann on a run-scoring single.  The Tigers took an early 4-0 lead.  The Tigers then marked a pair of runs in the second inning when Dobson scored on a wild pitch and Margaret Landis crossed home plate on an error by the Concordia shortstop.  ONU extended its lead to 6-0.

 

The Bulldogs cut into their deficit in the second inning on a solo home run and marked a run in the third inning making the score, 6-2.  After a scoreless fourth, the Tigers scored a pair of runs. Faith Mikos and Dobson hit back-to-back singles to open the inning.  After a fielder's choice, Mikos scored on an error by the second baseman.  Then, Oshiro picked up her second RBI of the game when she drove-in Margaret Landis.  ONU grew its lead to 8-2. 

 

The Tigers added a run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Timm as the Tigers bounced back from two losses earlier in the day to win, 9-2, over Concordia (Neb.). In the Tiger victory, Head Coach Hannah Gardner notched her 200th career victory as the coach of the Tigers.

The No. 9 Tigers continue play at the TIG Spring Games as they play Kansas Wesleyan University at 11 a.m. CST and finish the day with their second meeting against the University of Jamestown at 1:15 p.m. CST.
