LAKELAND, Fla. – The RV Olivet Nazarene University men's basketball team opened play at the Southeastern University Christmas Invitational inside the Furnace against Southeastern University on Friday afternoon. The Tigers hung on to take down the Fire, 67-63.
Landon Pflederer, Tyler Schmidt, and Alex Gross kicked off the scoring for the Tigers in the early going of the first half combining for the first 12 points. Both Pflederer and Schmidt drained three-balls during this stretch. Then, Griffin Andricks knocked down a trio of threes and eventually knotted up the score at 21. With two minutes left, the Tigers made a late push before going into the locker room. Cade Chitty and Andricks combined for the final five points of the half as the Tigers went into the half with a 32-27 lead.

Gross made a layup in the first 15 seconds of the second half to start the scoring for the Tigers. After a three for the Fire, Pflederer and Schmidt highlighted a 7-0 run, which made the score 41-30. The Fire tried to mount a comeback with about 10 minutes left in the game and went on a 15-4 run. The Fire led 51-49. After Southeastern extended its lead to four at 56-52, Gross and Andricks scored the next six points for the Tigers and they took back the lead at 58-56. With about a minute left and tied at 60, Schmidt made a layup to make the score, 62-60.
The Tigers then finished the game, making five of their final six shots from the charity stripe and defensively, Gross stepped up with a couple of key blocked shots. Despite a three-pointer by the Fire's Riley Minix with two seconds left, the Tigers held on to defeat the Fire, 67-63.
