ONU CLOSES OUT ROSEMONT TOURNAMENT WITH A TWO-GAME SPLIT

ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Olivet Nazarene University softball split a pair of games on the final day of the Rosemont Tournament on Saturday. After falling 2-1 to Madonna in the first game of the day, the Tigers bounced back to thrash Cleary (Mich.) 11-0.

Game One: Madonna 2, Olivet Nazarene 1

The Tigers weren't able to get any offense going early in the game, only recording three hits over the first five frames. ONU fell into a one-run hole early after a Madonna RBI triple in the bottom of the second.

Madonna extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single that put the Tigers at a 2-0 deficit. In the top of the sixth, Mallory O'Connor got the Tigers on the scoreboard with an RBI single that plated Zoe Oshiro to cut the lead to one.

The score would deadlock at 2-1, however, as the Tigers were unable to erase the deficit in the final inning. Gwen Bender lifted a one-out single to left field to get the tying run on board, but ONU couldn't push her around the bases.

Allie Timm went the distance as the starter, only surrendering two earned runs on five hits. She struck out three along the way. O'Connor led the Tigers at the plate with two hits and an RBI.

Game Two: Olivet Nazarene 11, Cleary (Mich.) 0

After two innings of scoreless ball, the Tigers blew the game wide open with an eye-popping nine-spot in the bottom of the third inning. Timm opened the scoring when she drew a bases-loaded walk and then Faith Mikos then sent a 2-RBI single to right field in the next at-bat.

Carissa Bombardiere then lifted a 2-RBI single of her own to make it 5-0 ONU. Avery Osborn was able to scamper home on a Cleary error, then Oshiro cleared the bases with a 2-RBI triple. Oshiro closed the scoring when she raced home on another Cleary error.

In total, the Tigers sent out four hits, drew five walks, and notched seven RBIs in the nine-run third inning. In the next inning, Mikos and Madelynn Flynn brought home runs to extend the lead to 11, ending the game in the fifth inning via mercy rule.

Emily Blucker pitched a complete game shutout, scattering three hits and striking out three. The Tigers drew eight walks and sent out eight hits in the win.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Tigers will have the next couple of weeks off before heading over to Fort Wayne, Ind. for a doubleheader against the Indiana Tech Warriors on Saturday, Feb. 25. Game one is set to begin at 12 p.m. CST.
