Tiger Athletics
Mission Statement
“To Provide Opportunity for Ministry Through Athletics”
Olivet Nazarene University, a denominational university in the Wesleyan tradition, exists to provide a university level liberal arts “Education with a Christian Purpose.” In keeping with the traditional association of sports with education, intercollegiate athletics constitutes an integral and very visible part of Olivet’s educational and spiritual purpose. Our athletic program provides a link and rallying point to our community, students, faculty, and alumni. Therefore, our athletes can be among our finest ambassadors. Student-athletes are given the daily opportunity to demonstrate their faith, scholarship, and competitiveness on the field and court and that those qualities effectively work together to provide opportunity for ministry through athletics.
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him”. Colossians 3:17
Philosophy
“Winning Championships and Developing Champions”
Our vision for Tiger Athletics is to take ONU to new heights and build upon our rich tradition which enhances our strong academic, athletic and spiritual history. This, while keeping sports in proper perspective, recognizing that although winning is a priority it is a result of our God-given talent working together with being committed, hard-working and dedicated. We strive to continue representing Him through excellence and reinforce our foundational principles laid by so many others before us, “to honor God in all that we do and say”.
This addition to our athletic department philosophy statement is reminder for us all, that disappointment and struggle are a necessary part of our growth in athletic competition and in our Christian life. By God’s grace we are restored and press on with the daily responsibility of making a positive impact for the kingdom of God and to use our platform in athletics to honor Him by the way we compete. Although “Winning Championships and Developing Champions” outwardly relates to athletic competition, inwardly we acknowledge it’s significance that goes far beyond the competition on the field/court.
