TIGERS DROP CONFERENCE TWIN BILL TO COUGARS

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene softball team's perfect record in conference play came to an end as the Tigers dropped a pair of tightly-contested games at Saint Xavier Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Saint Xavier 4, Olivet Nazarene 2

The opener went scoreless through the first three innings. That was until Megan Mann got ONU on the board first with a sacrifice fly that plated Mallory O'Connor to break the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning.

Saint Xavier (19-11, 5-2 CCAC) got that run back in their half of the fourth and added two more in the fifth to take a two-run lead. O'Connor scored again when she was brought home on a Haley Dobson RBI double to deep center that cut the lead to one in the sixth inning.

However, the Cougars added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Avery Osborn kicked off the seventh inning with a leadoff single, but the Tigers couldn't get any offense going after that to drop the opener 4-2.

Allie Timm went five innings as ONU's starter, giving up three earned runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Game 2: Saint Xavier 5, Olivet Nazarene 3

The Cougars jumped on the Tigers for four runs across the opening two frames, putting ONU in a hole that they couldn't climb out of. Haley Dobson continued her strong day with an RBI single in the third that plated Carissa Bombardiere.

Bombardiere then punched in a run of her own in the fourth inning when she laid down a sacrifice bunt that got the speedy Gwen Bender home from third base to cut the deficit to two.

The Tigers were unable to close the distance as Saint Xavier added another run in the bottom of fourth to extend the lead to three. Kori Fricke rocked an RBI double to center field to cut the lead back to two in the final inning, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars completed the doubleheader sweep with a 5-3 win in the nightcap.

Olivia Flinn went the distance as the Tiger starter. Three Tigers notched an RBI in the loss.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Tigers will host the Fighting Bees of St. Ambrose in a doubleheader at Tiger Field Tuesday afternoon. The first game is slated for 3 p.m. CST.
