ONU TAKE TWO-OF-THREE FROM WALDORF

O'FALLON, Mo. – The Olivet Nazarene University baseball team won two out of the three games in their series matchup against Waldorf Friday and Saturday. The Tigers swept the first two games of the series winning 5-1 in game one and were victorious in game two following a walk-off bunt to rally from a one-run deficit to a 14-13 win in extra innings. ONU fell in their series finale 2-0. Noah Couch finished the series with a team-high five runs batted in. Thomas Burns pitched a complete game in the opener which included nine strikeouts in the win.

 

Game 1: Olivet Nazarene 5, Waldorf 1

Thomas Burns made his fourth start of the year where he went a complete seven innings. The right-handed pitcher only allowed four hits, a single run, and a walk. He faced 27 batters and struck out a season-high nine.

After trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tigers' Evan Pogioli put ONU in front hitting a two-run home run to center field, his third home run of the year. Donovan Yelle and Noah Couch added insurance runs in the fifth and six innins respectively as Yelle knocked in an RBI single and Couch cleared the wall for a two-run blast, the first home run of his career.  

 

Game 2: Olivet Nazarene 14, Waldorf 13

The Tigers rallied in the sixth inning to score five runs in the sixth to force extra innings and then scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to win the afternoon's second game. Noah Couch hit three RBIs on top of the two recorded in the first game of the day. The freshman scored the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning off a wild pitch to extend the affair. Jack Dupuis ended the game with a bunt single that brought Garret Mooney home from third and officially end the day.

Taylor Steig also recorded three runs batted in in the game for 11 on the season including a two-run home run in the third inning. Geon Yoon hit his team-leading fifth home run of the year in the fourth. Sam Raczek accounted for a team-high three runs scored.

As a team, ONU tallied 13 hits which included five for extra bases including Kai Hudson's first triple of the season.   


Game 3: Waldorf 2, Olivet Nazarene 0

The Purple and Yellow-Gold pitching staff totaled 11 strikeouts in the series finale loss. Nolan Belschner took the mound as the starter for five innings of work and eight punchouts. He allowed five hits and both runs in the outing. Jordan Rhoden, Logan Marx, and Donovan Yelle all made appearances in relief with each recording a strikeout and allowing only a combined four baserunners.

ONU were held to only their third shutout of the season in the series' final game. Taylor Steig provided the most offense hitting 2-4 on the afternoon including a double.
