TIGERS WALK AWAY EMPTY-HANDED FROM TENNESSEE TRIP

McKENZIE, Tenn. –  Playing in their third extended road trip of the young season, the Olivet Nazarene University baseball team came close to picking up a split on the weekend but ultimately walked away empty-handed in a four-game set at Bethel (Tenn.).

After dropping both games by multiple runs Saturday in 11-4 and 7-3 setbacks, ONU fought back with a pair of one-run defeats on Sunday. The Tigers put runs across in the first frame of both games, but allowed big innings from the Wildcats to suffer defeats in both games.

The Tigers pounced on the Wildcats early in Sunday's opener. Jack Dupuis kicked off the game with a leadoff walk. He promptly stole second and bounced over to second on a Donovan Yelle Sacrifice. Kai Hudson then ripped a double to the outfield that scored Dupuis easily. In the next at-bat, Taylor Steig kept the rally going with a single that moved Hudson over to third. The duo then pulled off a double steal of second and home to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Wildcats retorted with a run in their half of the first before putting up four more runs in the second inning in taking a 5-2 lead. The lead deadlocked there until the fifth inning when Steig cleared the loaded bases with a 3-RBI double to knot the game back up. However, a passed ball in the bottom of the fifth allowed Bethel to retake a 6-5 lead, which would prove to be the final score.

Sunday's second game followed a similar script, with ONU punching in a run in the first inning before the Wildcats pieced together a big run to take the lead for good.

Dupuis lifted a leadoff single before getting into scoring position by stealing second. Hudson scored his teammate with a single to take a 1-0 lead. The Tigers held that lead until the fifth inning where the Wildcats did all of their damage with five runs. Steig lifted a three-run homer in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to one, but that was the last time ONU could get runs across in the 5-4 defeat.

The Tigers will travel to Missouri for the two-day Show-Me Showdown in Fayette, Mo. ONU will open the event with a game against MidAmerica Nazarene on Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. CST.
