BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – After sweeping the Fighting Bees on the road in a doubleheader Thursday, the Olivet Nazarene University baseball team used the long ball to secure the season-series win over St. Ambrose Friday afternoon at Watson Field.
Evan Pogioli and Aden Aukland both sent homers over the wall to lift ONU to a 6-5 win in the opener. St. Ambrose would stave off the four-game sweep with a 10-8 win to round out the series.
The Fighting Bees (6-12, 3-5 CCAC) came out of the gate firing with two quick runs in the opening frame. They looked poised for an even bigger inning with the bases loaded and nobody out, but Joey Boland navigated his way out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundball double play to limit the damage.
After the shaky start, the senior southpaw settled into a groove, allowing just one hit and blanking the Bees over the next three innings. This allowed the ONU bats to find their rhythm, punching in runs across the next four innings to build the game-winning lead.
Pogioli kickstarted the offense with his solo shot in the second, Jack Dupuis tied the score with an RBI double in the third, and back-to-back RBI singles from Sam Reczek and Takumi Kimoto in the fourth put the Tigers in front. SAU reclaimed the lead with a three-spot in the fifth, but Aukland's two-run jack gave ONU the advantage for good.
Boland went 4.1 innings as the starter before passing the ball to Michael Freitas who tacked down the win in relief. Freitas closed out the final 2.2 innings with zero earned runs, three strikeouts, and allowing just two hits.
St. Ambrose jumped out to another quick lead in the nightcap, but ONU was unable to close the gap the second time around. The Fighting Bees built an 8-2 advantage before the Tigers came roaring back with five runs in the final three innings.
Alex Seaton shined in the loss, going 4-for-5 at the plate with a game-high five RBIs. Dupuis hit 2-for-3 and scored three runs.
The Tigers will stay at Watson Field to host Trinity Christian in a doubleheader Tuesday.
