TIGERS SUFFER HOME OPENING LOSS TO RV PIKEVILLE

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - The Olivet Nazarene women's basketball program opened the 2022-23 season with a 94-88 loss at the hands of the RV University of Pikeville Bears during Homecoming weekend. ONU were led by senior guard Maggie Cora who finished the night with 17 points and three rebounds.



Both ball clubs started the game hot with their best shooting efficiency of the contest coming in the first quarter. The Tigers just edged the visitors shooting at a 52.9% clip to the visitors 52.6%, but the Bears held the slight advantage on the scoreboard converting one additional basket from beyond the arc.

 


Cora's bulk of points were scored in the first half. The Lizton, Ind. native poured in eights points in the first two quarters for a total 16 after 20 minutes played. She was six for nine from the floor with four of six three-pointer attempts made.



Pikeville built an eight point lead at halftime. The visitors went on a 9-0 run which spanned just 56 seconds before Anne Peters' three-ball stopped the bleeding at the 5:14-mark in the third period. The Bears went on another run to end the half outsourcing the Purple and Gold 8-2.

UPike took their largest lead of the night at the 7:38-mark in the third quarter. With the score 60-10, ONU began their climb back with an 8-2 run capped off by a Khendel Rolison three-point basket to make it a four-point game. Caroline Boehne gave the home team the 68-67 lead with a three-point play with 1:54 left in the quarter and then a layup a minute later built the Tigers' their biggest lead of the game at six. Olivet went into the final quarter leading, 70-73.

 


There were 12 lead changes combined between both teams and neither team led by more than six in the fourth quarter. Bett O'Neal found a lane for a layup with 1:22 left in the game to level the score at 88-88. Pikeville's top scorers for the night, Mary Englert and Sierra Feltner closed out the night scoring the final six points handing the Tigers their first loss of the year.
