NO. 19 ONU DROP A PAIR OF GAMES ON WEDNESDAY AT THE TIG SPRING GAMES

TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 19 Olivet Nazarene University softball team played a pair of games on Wednesday at the TIG Spring Games.  The Tigers fell in the first game, 8-3, against Kansas Wesleyan, and were edged by the Jimmies of the University of Jamestown in the final game of the day, 3-2. 

 

Game One: Kansas Wesleyan 8, No. 19 Olivet Nazarene 3

The Coyotes jumped on the board first on an RBI single in the opening inning, making the score, 1-0.  Kansas Wesleyan then extended its lead in the third inning on an RBI double, an RBI single and a two-run double.  The Tigers trailed, 5-0.  The Tigers finally cracked the scoring column, in the bottom of the third, as Zoe Oshiro drove-in Kailyn Ngo on a single to left field.  The Coyotes led 5-1.  In the fourth, Kansas Wesleyan scored a run on an ONU error, extending its lead to 6-1. 

 

The Tigers tried to chip into their deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning.  With two outs, Kori Fricke reached on an error and Megan Mann came across to score.  Then, Vannah Vaughan platted Kate Landis on an RBI single. The Tigers cut the Coyote lead to 6-3. 

 

Kansas Wesleyan solidified the win as they struck for a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh.  The Tigers fell, 8-3, in the first game of the day.  Olivia Flinn started the game pitching two innings then Emily Blucker threw the final five innings in the loss. 

 

Game Two: Jamestown 3, No. 19 Olivet Nazarene 2

Unlike game one, runs were hard to come by in the final game of the day.  Head Coach Hannah Gardner gave the ball to Fricke in this game as she went the distance and surrendered six hits, on three runs, and struck out three. 

 

The Jimmies struck first in the first inning on an RBI groundout making the score, 1-0.  Jamestown then added to its lead in the third inning when they scored on an error by the ONU second basemen.  The Jimmies led 2-0.  The Tigers then tied the game with runs in the sixth and seventh.  In the sixth inning, Mann led off the inning with a single.  After a pair of groundouts, Fricke helped her own cause with an RBI single to cut the Jimmie lead to 2-1.  In the seventh inning, Faith Mikos, Margaret Landis, and Oshiro all singled to load the bases.  Haley Dobson then flied out to left field and Mikos scored tying the game at two all. 

 

The Jimmies broke through with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as the Tigers fall in game two, 3-2. 

 

WHAT'S NEXT?

The No. 19 Tigers play three games on Thursday, March 10.  They play William Penn at 12 p.m. CST, then compete against Dakota Wesleyan at 1:15 p.m. CST before concluding the day against Valley City State at 6:45 p.m. CST.
