ONU DRAWS WITH BENEDICTINE IN SEASON OPENER

ATCHINSON, KS. - In a riveting start to their season, Olivet Nazarene University's women's soccer team showcased their talent and determination as they battled Benedictine College to a well-fought draw in their season opener. The final score of 1-1 reflected the resilience and skill of both teams on the field during Saturday's match at Legacy Field.

First Half: Early Strike by Benedictine 

The game commenced with palpable excitement from both teams as they were eager to make their mark in the opening minutes. Benedictine's senior forward, Riley Degner, made an impact just 11 minutes into the game. With a burst of energy and precision, Degner found the back of the net, securing a jubilant moment for her team. The goal was made possible by a well-timed assist from sophomore midfielder Christine Znidarsic. 

The first half continued with intense back-and-forth action ONU worked hard to mount a response, striving to equalize before the halftime whistle. Both defensive lines held firm, ensuring that the scoreline remained 1-0 in favor of Benedictine going into the break.

Second Half: Olivet's Resurgence 

As the second half kicked off, the Tigers displayed their determination to turn the tide of the game. The relentless effort of the team paid off in the 69th minute when junior forward Hannah Dela Vega capitalized on a scoring opportunity, finding the back of the net with finesse and accuracy. The goal was a result of a skillful collaboration between Dela Vega and junior defender Annabel Murley, whose precise assist perfectly set up Dela Vega's clinical finish. 

With the score now level at 1-1, the intensity on the field escalated as both teams sought to break the deadlock. The match progressed with end-to-end action, with goalkeepers and defenders on both sides showcasing their agility and determination to deny any further goals.

Looking Ahead 

The season opener draw against Benedictine serves as a promising start for ONU.

The Tigers are set to play their next match against John Brown University on August 31st. Kickoff is set to take place at 7 p.m. CST at Alumni Field in Siloam Springs, AR.
