ONU NOTCHES FIRST CCAC WIN IN A PAIR OF MIDWEEK SERIES

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University softball team collected its first win in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference for the 2024 campaign in a doubleheader split against Roosevelt Tuesday at Tiger Field. On a quick turnaround, they traveled to St. Ambrose Wednesday and suffered a doubleheader sweep to the Fighting Bees at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex in Davenport, Iowa.

After dropping the opener against Roosevelt 7-2, the Purple & Yellow Gold rallied for a 5-4 come-from-behind victory in the finale to get in the CCAC win column. The Tigers struggled to get any offense going in the series against St. Ambrose, only putting up one run in each game with final scores of 3-1 and 5-1.

The Tigers kicked off the week with a bang as Carissa Bombardiere and Margaret Landis rocked back-to-back doubles in the first inning of Tuesday's opener to build an early 1-0 lead. The offense would stall, however, and the Lakers (10-14, 5-1 CCAC) took advantage with a pair of three-run innings in the fifth and seventh to take the win. Allie Timm was given the loss as the ONU starter.

The first inning remained a strong point in the nightcap as the Tigers quickly put up three runs in the opening frame. A squeeze bunt from Landis brought home the speedy Zoe Oshiro before Mallory O'Connor rolled an RBI base hit through the left side. Kahiwa Ili capped off the big inning with an RBI double to make it 3-0 Tigers after one.

Roosevelt battled back with a crooked four-run third inning to claim the lead. But Landis again came through in the clutch, rocking a 2-RBI double to the wall in left that brought home Bombardiere and Oshiro and gave ONU a 5-4 advantage. The score would hold as the Tigers locked down their first CCAC victory.

Landis went 4-for-6 with four RBIs to lead the ONU offense in the series, including a three-RBI performance in the win. Bombardiere also went 4-for-6 in the series with multiple hits in both games. Olivia Flinn went the distance as the starter, allowing just three earned runs to go with four strikeouts in earning her third victory of the season.

On the next-day turnaround, the offense failed to get going in the St. Ambrose series. Oshiro scampered home on a wild pitch to stake a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but that proved to be the only run for ONU in the opener as the Bees (14-20, 3-3 CCAC) plated single runs in the first, third, and fifth innings to take the win. SAU then jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead after five innings in the finale. O'Connor lifted an RBI single to center field to get the Tigers on the board, but it was not enough in the 5-1 defeat.

The Tigers will continue their conference slate with a doubleheader at Trinity Christian Saturday in Palos Heights, Ill. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m. CST.
