ONU OVERTAKES BETHEL IN STRAIGHT SETS

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University men's volleyball program won in straight sets on back-to-back nights after defeating Bethel (Ind.) 3-0. Thoralf Schmelzer recorded a game-high 16 points and 13 kills. Tomas Gonzalez ended the night with a season-high 11 digs.


The Tigers led throughout the first set but the Pilots never trailed by more than four points. As the set leveled at 19-19, Cade Ooms sparked a 4-1 run and a 23-20 lead. Consecutive Kahaku Marquez kills ended the set giving the Tigers the 1-0 set advantage.

ONU sporadically built a 17-12 lead in set number two. The two sides traded 4-0 runs before Jake Ostema and Schmelzer struck for the final two points in a 25-20 second set.

Ooms and James Ballance's service opened the third set will a 6-1 ONU run. They continued their run to build a 21-13 lead, their largest of the match. Sterling Staranchuk tallied the final point of the match off an assist from Hunder DeMello.

Gonzales assisted 36 times in back-to-back games. The Tigers as a team hit for .330 and out assisting the opposition 45-27.
