ONU CONCLUDES MMVI WITH A PAIR OF LOSSES TO LAWRENCE TECH AND SIENA HEIGHTS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Olivet Nazarene University men's volleyball team dropped the last two matches of the Men's Michigan Volleyball Invitational (MMVI) on Saturday. The Tigers competed against Lawrence Tech in the morning followed by RV Siena Heights in the afternoon in the tournament hosted by Cornerstone University at the MOL Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.

First Match: Lawrence Tech 3, Olivet Nazarene 1

Olivet built an early lead in the first set. Kills from Collier Kahaku Marquez, Max Slaughter, and James Ballance contributed to a 13-7 advantage. Lawrence Tech ended the set on a 13-4 run and took the first set 25-20.

The Blue Devils carried the momentum from the first set into the second. LT rolled to a 25-14 win by hitting at a .429 clip and only committing three errors. Will Kraft and Jackson Harvey tallied kills to end on a positive note heading into the third set.

The Tigers won their first set of the day and avoided the sweep taking set number three 29-27. ONU hit their highest percentage for the match at .444. They also registered a game-high 36 total attacks with 20 kills. The set witnessed 16 ties and 5 lead changes. Olivet had set-point four times and broke through as Jaiton Kamaunu and Kahaku Marquez scored in consecutive plays to claim the set.

Lawrence Tech sparked a 9-0 run in the final half of the fourth set witch led to the match victory. With the score standing 23-13 in the Blue Devils' favor, the Tigers responded with a 6-1 run of their own, but an LT kill in their second match-point ended the contest.

Second Match: (RV) Siena Heights 3, Olivet Nazarene 0

RV Siena Heights build an early 7-2 lead in the first set. The Tigers were able to string together three consecutive points with kills from Collier Kahaku Marquez, Max Slaughter, and Jackson Harvey. With the set still in the balance, ONU went on a 4-0 run to cut the Saints' lead to 22-17 before SHU took the final three points to claim set number one.

SHU built another early lead in the second set scoring five of the first seven points. The Tigers ripped off three points of their own from Marquez, Ramon Matos, and a Saints' attack error to make it a one-point set. Olivet took their first lead of the contest with the score at 12-11 after a failed SHU attack. ONU held a four-point lead late in the set and even forced a set-point five times but could not put the Saints away. The Michigan side rattled off three consecutive points once more to win set two.

Siena Heights jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the third set. Jackson Harvey and a few SHU attacking errors brought the Tigers back to being down one point. The Saints created some breathing room scoring four consecutive points to bring the game to the score of 21-15. With the game on the line, the Tigers fought to extend the contest going on a 6-1 run but could not complete the comeback as SHU won 25-22 sweeping three sets.
