ONU SETS PROGRAM RECORD FOR 3-POINTERS MADE IN WIN OVER TCC
PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University men's basketball team set a new program record with 17 made 3-pointers to pick up a 92-78 road win over Trinity Christian Saturday afternoon in DeVos Gymnasium.
The Tigers shot 63 percent from deep, knocking down 17 of their 27 attempts from beyond the arc, to set the new program record for 3-pointers made in a single game. The previous record of 16 triples in one contest had stood for 17 years, with the 2007-08 team first hitting the mark against Illinois Tech before the 2019-20 squad matched it with 16 against Trinity International.
Freshman guard Tyler Curl led the 3-point barrage, shooting a scorching 7-of-9 from deep. Caleb Corro and Andrew Bennett knocked down four triples apiece. Caleb Swearingen and Eli Edwards both hit a 3-pointer, as well, to get to the record-setting number.
The Tigers knocked down 10 of those threes in the opening period, led by a 4-for-4 performance from Curl and three more triples from Bennett off the bench, to race out to a 12-point lead halftime lead at 49-37.
Trinity Christian (7-19, 4-14 CCAC) was able to cut the lead to seven at 65-58 midway through the second half. But a pair of Daniel Murphy free throws sparked an extended 13-3 run to put the game out of reach. Corro knocked down two triples and Curl added a 3-pointer of his own in the stretch, and when Edwards capped the spurt with a jumper, the Tigers led by 17. The outcome was never in question from there.
Edwards, in his first start since Dec. 30, 2024, filled in a career-high 27 points on 12-of-18 shooting from the floor to lead ONU in scoring. The junior forward from Kokomo, Ind., also hauled in five rebounds and recorded three steals in the win.
Curl had a career day, as well, registering 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting and his seven triples. Corro recorded 16 and Bennett finished with a dozen.
The Tigers, winners of three in a row, will host Indiana South Bend Wednesday.
