BATS HEAT UP AS TIGERS ROLL PAST CRIMSON WAVE

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Tiger bats came to life as the Olivet Nazarene University softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep of Calumet Saturday afternoon. The Tigers notched double-digit hits in both games to improve to 20-12 overall and 9-3 in the CCAC.

Game 1: Olivet Nazarene 7, Calumet 2

The Tigers struck early in the opener. With runners on first and second, Mallory O'Connor lifted a single to right field. The ball was misplayed by Calumet which allowed ONU to plate two runs and take an early lead in the first inning.

Calumet (11-21, 5-5 CCAC) tacked on a run in the third and fourth innings to draw even at 2-2. But that was when Megan Mann, who sent two over the wall in a single game earlier this week, rocked a two-run homer to straight-away center to put ONU back on top.

The Tigers would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Margaret Landis plated a run with an RBI fielder's choice, Vannah Vaughan scampered home on a passed ball, and Mann singled to center field for her third RBI of the day.

This allowed Kori Fricke, who escaped a pair of bases-loaded jams earlier in the game, some wiggle room as she cruised to her seventh win and sixth complete game of the season. She struck out seven on five hits with just two walks in the complete-game win.

Game 2: Olivet Nazarene 8, Calumet 0

ONU banged out 14 hits for the second time this week in the second game. Three of those came off the bats of O'Connor and Kate Landis. Olivia Flinn and Margaret Landis each had two hits.

The Tigers got all the offense they would need in the opening inning. After ONU sent out back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, Haley Dobson roped a 2-RBI single down the left-field line. Mann then continued her incredible day at the plate with an RBI double off the wall in left field. Flinn, who was the ONU pitcher for game two, helped her own cause with an RBI single to put the Tigers up 4-0 after the first inning.

ONU tacked on a run in the fourth inning to make it 5-0. After Kate Landis wheeled home on a wild pitch, O'Connor ended the game early with a 2-RBI single up the middle to shut things down in the fifth inning.

Flinn blanked the Crimson Wave with a four-hit shutout in the five-inning nightcap. She struck out three en route to her fifth win of the season.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Tigers will take on Trinity International in Deerfield, Ill., Monday afternoon for a makeup doubleheader. The first game is set for 3 p.m. CST.
