LONG BALL LIFTS TIGERS TO DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF ST. AMBROSE

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – A pair of home runs by Megan Mann in the opener and a late long ball from Haley Dobson in the nightcap gave the Olivet Nazarene University softball team the offense they needed to take down St. Ambrose in a doubleheader sweep Tuesday evening.

Game 1: Olivet Nazarene 10, St. Ambrose 2

The Tigers pounded out 14 hits in the opener, shelling out six of them for five runs in the sixth inning to end the game early.

St. Ambrose, who entered the doubleheader atop the conference standings, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. But Megan Mann sent a ball flying over the wall in left-center to quickly erase the deficit. In the next inning, Mann erased another one-run Fighting Bee lead with an RBI double.

And she wasn't done there. With the game deadlocked at 2-2, Mann broke the tie with a three-run blast for her second home run of the game. The Tigers then tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game via mercy rule at 10-2.

Mann was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs and two home runs to lead the ONU offense in the opener. Kori Fricke went the distance as the starter to pick up her sixth win of the year, only allowing one earned run along the way.

Game 2: Olivet Nazarene 4, St. Ambrose 3

The ONU offense slowed way down in the second game of the doubleheader, scattering only four hits and leaving six runners on base over the first four innings of play. This allowed the Fighting Bees, who finally started to find their rhythm at the plate, to build a 3-0 lead by the fifth inning.

The Tigers finally started to click on offense in their half of the fifth. After ONU loaded the bases, Mann continued her incredible day with an RBI single that got the speedy Faith Mikos home from third base. Kate Landis then narrowed the SAU lead to one with an RBI single of her own.

With the Tigers trailing one and down to their final three outs, Haley Dobson opened the bottom of the seventh with a home run, a straightaway shot to center field, to the the game at 3-3.

Mann then drew a walk and was courtesy ran for by Vannah Vaughn, who was promptly pushed over to third base when Madelynn Flinn rocked a double to gap in right-center. With the winning run 60 feet away, the Fighting Bees attempted to intentionally walk Kate Landis. The first pitch got away from the SAU catcher, which allowed Vaughn to race home and score the game-winning run for the Tigers.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Tigers will travel east to take on the Indiana South Bend Titans in a doubleheader Friday, April 14. The first game is slated for 2 p.m. CST.
