TIGERS TALLY CONFERENCE WINS NO. 19 AND 20 OVER CALUMET

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University baseball team improved to 20-2 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) after a series sweep over the Calumet Crimson Wave Saturday afternoon. The Tigers have won eight consecutive series along with an NAIA-leading 19-game win streak.


GAME 1: ONU 12, CCSJ 4

 ONU fell into a hole early in the contest as the Crimson Wave after a pair of home runs, one in the first inning and the second in the fourth. Jacob Bulthuis hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the fourth to wake up the Tigers' bats. Olivet proceeded to score six runs in the inning with Kai Hudson, Donovan Yelle, Robert Jackman, and Rod Lucas all recording an RBI. Bulthuis came back up to bat for the second time in the inning. He put a ball into play forcing the third baseman into an error and scored the sixth and final run of the inning.

Calumet manufactured two more runs in the top of the fifth inning before turning it back to the Olivet offense. In the bottom half of the inning, the Purple and Gold tallied an additional four runs to put the game out of reach. Alex Ortiz doubled to right-center field to score Gunnar Pullins. Lucas recorded his second RBI of the game with a single back up the middle. Ryan Russmann hits a single that scored two runs to increase the lead to 10-4. Yelle doubled to right-center field for two additional insurance runs.

Nolan Belschner recorded his fourth win on the campaign pitching five innings and striking out seven. Payton Bovie came in relief to finish the last two frames giving up no hits, no walks, and striking out two to secure the victory.


GAME 2: ONU 14, CCSJ 3

The Tigers built a substantial lead early in the second game of the day putting up eight runs in the first three innings. Kai Hudson broke open the scoring with a two-RBI single to center field in the first inning. Gunnar Pullins and Alex Oritz drove home two additional runs in the first frame to make it a 4-0 ballgame. ONU score four more runs in the third inning with Pullins, Jordan Almodovar, Donovan Yelle, and Robert Jackman all contributing to the scoring.

The Crimson Wave scored twice in the fourth inning to cut the lead to six. Olivet snuffed out any comeback opportunity as they scored six runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Thomas Burns was credited with his third win of the year. The right-handed pitcher only allowed two runs scored while tying a season-high five strikeouts. Michael Freitas took the mound in the sixth inning and struck out the side before Michael Cousino recorded the final three outs in the seventh.

 

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Tigers travel to Judson on Tuesday, April 19th at Hoffer Field in Elgin, Ill. for a nine-inning game that starts at 3 p.m.
