FARIA WINS SINGLES TITLE IN THE ITA CENTRAL EAST REGIONAL AT ONU

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University men's tennis teams hosted the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central East Regional at the Snowbarger Athletic Complex on Thursday through Saturday.

On day one of play, the Tigers had three individuals that advanced to the Round of 16. Those include the number one seed Francisco Faria, number ten seed Alex Verdu, and freshman Juan Diaz Banuls.  Faria won both of his matches 6-0, 6-0.  Verdu won both of his matches in straight sets, and Banuls won his three matches in straight sets as well, including upsetting the number 12 seed Schorr from William Woods.

On day two of play, the Tigers fought hard and saw only Faria reach the third day of action winning both of his singles matches.  Also, on the singles side, both Verdu and Banuls were battle-tested and fell.  In doubles play, the team of Verdu and Feria proved to be the winningest Tiger team winning their first two matches, 8-0 and 8-4.  Unfortunately, the Tiger duo fell in the quarters by an 8-6 narrow margin.  The team of James Carr and Banuls won a thriller of a match, 8-5. Carr and Banuls, unfortunately, ran into the No. 1 seed and fell 8-1.

On the final day of the tournament, only Faria was left for the Tigers.  Faria started the day winning his semifinal match, 6-2 and 6-4, and advanced to the finals.  In the final, Faria won his finals match in convincing fashion, 6-2 and 6-1.  Francisco advanced to the ITA Cup in Rome, Ga.
