TIGERS SERVE THEIR WAY TO VICTORY OVER JAGUARS
UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – Double-digit aces, including eight from Ashley Poland, keyed the Tigers to victory Thursday evening. After a string of four-consecutive conference losses, the Olivet Nazarene University women's volleyball team was able to bounce back in a major way with a 25-22, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17 victory at Governors State.
The Tigers had to earn the opening set, finding themselves trailing 22-21 down the stretch. Kaylee Cozen's elite play at the net helped ONU pull away, stymying a Jaguar attack with a solo block before teaming up with Sutton Bate to deny another attack and putting the Tigers at set point. Bate then put away a ball from Julianne Kielion to take the opener.
After a tightly-contested first set, the second set was all Tigers. ONU built a 17-5 lead highlighted by an Poland eight-point serve streak. Kylie Hasselbacher put away a kill to stamp the finishing touches on a statement set for ONU.
The Governors State Jaguars found their lone set win in the third set and carried a bit of momentum into the fourth set, building a 3-0 lead out of the gate.
The Tigers responded with four-straight, taking kills from Kielion, Bate, and Cozen to regain the momentum. The two squads traded points until Poland broke put together another great serve, collecting back-to-back service aces to help the Tigers break away. Poland scored match point with one of her eight aces on the night.
