PITCHING STAFF STYMIES CRIMSON WAVE IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The pitching staff of the Olivet Nazarene University baseball team was lights out in keying a doubleheader sweep of the Calumet Crimson Wave Friday afternoon at Watson Field.
Jacob Aseltine tossed a complete-game shutout to lead ONU to a 5-0 victory in the series opener before the Tigers closed out the day with a 7-3 win in the nightcap.
The right-handed freshman from Batavia, Ill., threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out five en route to his team-leading fifth win of the season.
And he got all the run support he would need thanks to two big innings. Alex Seaton broke the scoreless tie with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the third, and Masen Beatty followed up with an RBI double of his own in the fourth. Taylor Bledsoe and Takumi Kimoto punctuated the big fourth inning with one RBI each to put the game out of reach.
After the Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the nightcap, Calumet (5-16, 2-10 CCAC) fought back with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to take their first lead of the day. But ONU quickly responded with a five-spot in their half of the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Aden Aukland and Andy Onnen both record two-RBI hits, with the former kicking off the inning with a bases-loaded single up the middle and the latter wrapping the inning with a double to left. Evan Pogioli roped an RBI single in the inning, as well.
Nicholas Gniedziejko allowed just one earned run in five innings of work as the starter. He also struck out a season-high nine batters. Tyler Snoreck tacked down the win in relief.
The Tigers will go for the series sweep Sunday afternoon at Oil City Stadium.
