Baseball Scores 33 Runs on 39 Hits in Series Sweep against Roosevelt

CRESTWOOD/BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University baseball team played a three-game series against the Lakers of Roosevelt that started on Friday at Ozinga Field and concluded with a doubleheader at Watson Field on Saturday.

Game One (Friday): ONU 8, Roosevelt 4

The Tigers got off to a slow starts as they surrendered three Laker runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Tigers get one back in the third inning on an RBI ground out by Terry Daniels (SR/Auburn, N.Y.), knocking in Timo Schau (SR/Chicago, Ill.), who led off the inning with a double. The Tigers and Lakers played the next third innings scoreless until the Tigers took the lead in seventh inning. With one out, Nathan Moonen (SR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) doubled and then Tyler Wheeler (JR/Graham, Wash.) doubled, which platted Moonen, closing the game to 3-2. Kai Hudson (SO/St. Petersburg, Fla.) then delivered an RBI single, scoring the pinch runner Gunnar Pullins (JR/Valparaiso, Ind.). After Schau and Ryan Russman (SO/Wheaton, Ill.) hit back-to-back singles to load the bases, Daniels came through and with a two-run single making the score 4-3.

The Tigers and Lakers went into the ninth with a 4-3 score until the Tigers marked a few insurance runs. With one out, Hudson doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Russman singled home Hudson. After Daniels hit a one-bagger, Jacob Bulthuis (SR/Tinley Park, Ill.) tripled to right and drove in two runs making the score 8-3. The Lakers scored a run in the ninth to make the score 8-4.

Starting pitcher Ryan Jemar (SO/Bourbonnais, Ill.) went seven strong innings, surrendering seven runs on three runs, while striking out nine batters and Tyler Guertin (SR/Bourbonnais, Ill.) closed out the final two innings, striking out four batters, as the Tigers won game one, 8-4.

Game Two: ONU 13 Roosevelt 0

After a scoreless first inning, the Tigers start to pile on runs in the bottom of the second. The Tigers marked their first run when Tyler Wheeler scored on an error by the shortstop. Later in the inning, Hudson drove in Ortiz on a single, Schau platted pinch runner Jake Lingle (JR/Avon, Ind.) on a sacrifice fly, Russman singled home Hudson, and Daniels platted the fifth run in the inning on an RBI base-hit making the score 5-0.

The Tigers kept up their scoring ways in the bottom of the fourth. Schau scored when Daniels reached on a fielder's choice. After a single by Bulthuis, Pullins grounded into a fielder's choice and, in the meantime, because of an error by the short stop, scored Daniels and Russman. Later in the inning, Moonen dropped a sacrifice bunt to score Pullins. A few batters later, Hudson, who is having an impressive series, singled home Ortiz making the score,10-0.

The Tigers scored one in the fifth and a pair of runs in the sixth and won 13-0. Ethan Underwood (SO/Woodstock, Ga.) went four innings surrendered three hits and struck out four batters.

Game Two: ONU 12, Roosevelt 2

After the Lakers scored a run in the top of the first, the Tigers roared back with three runs in the first inning. Daniels singled home Schau, Bulthuis drove in Daniels on an RBI groundout, and the third run came off the bat of Ortiz on an RBI triple. The Tigers led 3-1. It did not take long for the Tigers to extend their lead. In the second, Schau scored on an error, Russman crossed home plate on a bunt by Dylan Miller (JR/Las Vegas, Nev.), and Ortiz singled home Daniels making the score 6-1.

While Aren Gustafson (JR/Rockton, Ill.) was dealing throwing seven strong innings allowing only seven hit and two runs and struck out 11 batters, the Tigers bats were still on fire. After the Tigers gave up a run in the top of the inning, they scored six in the bottom of the inning to seal the win. Bulthuis scored the first run on a sacrifice bunt by Ortiz, then K.C Isenberg singled home Pullins. A few batters later was Hudson and he delivered a single through the left side and platted Isenberg. Schau then doubled home two runs and Russman, sealed the 12-2 win with an RBI double.
