ONU Takes Down Titans and Trolls at Watson Field

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University baseball team hosted the Titans of Indiana University at South Bend and the Trolls of Trinity Christian College in a makeshift doubleheader at Watson Field on Monday.

Game One: ONU 11, IUSB 9

The Tigers got off to a slow start surrendering four runs in the first two innings until the Tigers cut the lead in half on a two-run homer by Terry Daniels (SR/Auburn, N.Y.) in the bottom of the third inning. The Tigers gave up a grand slam in the top of the fourth making the score 8-2.

The Tigers tried to cut into the six-run deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Kai Hudson (SO/St. Petersburg, Fla.) tripled and later Timo Schau (SR/Chicago, Ill.) drove him in on an RBI groundout making the score 8-3. The Tigers then added two more in the bottom of the sixth inning. ONU loaded the bases on two walk and a single. Nathan Moonen (SR/Fort Wayne, Ind.) then singled home Alex Ortiz (FR/Ponte Vendra Beach, Fla.) and Jacob Bulthuis (SR/Tinley Park, Ill.) making the score, 8-5.

ONU then made a major come back in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Daniels singled and Bulthuis walked. Ortiz then platted Daniels. Moonen then singled home Bulthuis making the score 8-7. After Nolan Louis (SO/Alachua, Fla.) was hit by the pitch to load the bases, Jordan Almodover (JR/Deltona, Fla.) also got hit and scored the game-tying run. Hudson then hit his second triple and unloaded the bases making the score, 11-8.

The Titans scored a run in the top of the ninth an RBI groundout but the Tigers completed the come back winning, 11-9.

Game Two: ONU 14, TCC 2 F/7

The Tigers kicked off the scoring with three in the first inning on an RBI single by Ryan Russman (SO/Wheaton, Ill.) and later Russman scored on a balk, and finally Moonen grounded into a fielder's choice to drive in Bulthuis making the score 3-0. The Tigers then platted six more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Russman kicked off the scoring with an RBI bunt single. Later in the inning, Daniels laced a double down the right field line and scored Schau. Daniels and Russman then both scored on an error by third basemen making the score, 7-0. The Tigers kept scoring in the second as Moonen drove in Ortiz and Moonen, later scored on, when Tyler Wheeler (JR/Graham, Wash.) reached on an error. The Tigers were up 9-0 after two innings.

ONU then added a pair of runs in the third inning when Schau ran home on a passed ball and Buthuis platted Daniels on a ground out making the score 11-0. After Louis scored in the fourth inning, the Trolls cut into the Tiger lead to 12-2 in the fifth inning.

The Tigers then added a couple more runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Trolls in seven innings, 14-2.
