ONU Baseball Sweeps Trinity Christian In Offensive Explosion

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University baseball team continues its busy stretch of games traveling to Trinity Christian for a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader. The Tigers kept up their explosive offensive play combining for 34 runs and 32 hits in today's doubleheader.

Game One: ONU 19, TCC 2

The Tigers built off the momentum in their doubleheader sweep on Monday and jumped on the board first in the first inning. With two outs, Terry Daniels reached on error and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a Jacob Bulthuis walk, Daniels stole home and scored the game's first run. Then, Tyler Wheeler doubled down the left field line and drove in Bulthuis and Alex Ortiz tripled home pinch runner Jordan Veldman. The Tigers led 3-0.

After the Trolls scored in the bottom of the first on an RBI single, the Tigers went back to work in the second inning. The Tigers marked the first run of the inning when Nolan Louis scored on a passed ball. After a groundout, Ryan Russman tripled home Kai Hudson. Daniels then doubled to left center and platted Russman. Bulthuis then hit a three-bagger and Daniels scored. With two outs, Ortiz dumped a single into center field as Bulthuis scored the fifth run of the inning and the Tigers led 8-1.

The Tigers see one more run cross home plate in the top of the 3rd on an RBI single by Russman making the score 9-1. ONU then opened the flood gates in the fourth inning. The first run came off the bat of Bulthuis, who singled home Daniels. Later in the inning, Nathan Moonen singled home Bulthuis. After Hudson reached on an error and two came across to score, Timo Schau platted Louis on a sacrifice fly. Continuing his impressive game at the plate was Russman and he singled home Hudson marking the sixth run of the inning. The Tigers were not done scoring yet as they add two more off the bat of Bulthuis on a two-run single making the score, 17-1. The Tigers added a run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Gunnar Pullins, who pinch hit for Schau making the score 18-1.

In the top of the sixth inning, Bulthuis led off with a triple and later scored on a groundout by Jordan Almodover extending the Tiger lead to 19-1. The Trolls got one run closer in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single. ONU still led 19-2.

Tyler Guertin started for the Tigers and pitched six innings and Braden Shelton finished the game as the Tigers used explosive offense and big games to win the first game 19-2.

Game Two: ONU 15 TCC 5 F/7

The Tigers pick up from they left off in the first game into the second game and marked runs right away. Daniels and Dylan Miller marked RBI singles and Ortiz added an RBI double as the Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. The Tigers added more runs in the second. Hudson led off the inning with a double and Schau followed with a single that scored Hudson. With two outs, Miller picked up his second RBI single in the game and notched the team's second run of the inning. With the bases loaded, Moonen stroked a double onto the outfield grass and unloaded the bases making the score 8-0.

After the Tigers picked up another run in the top of the third on an RBI ground out, the Trolls picked up their first runs of the game on a two-run single making the score 9-2. The Trolls would make the score 9-3 in the bottom of the fourth when a run scored on an error. The Tigers put up more runs in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by Miller and Bulthuis. Later in the inning, Veldman, who pinch ran for Miller, scored on a wild pitch and KC Isenberg hit a sacrifice fly making the score, 13-3. After an RBI single by TCC in the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers mark a pair of runs in the sixth when two scored on an error making the score 15-4.

The Trolls marked a run in the bottom of the seventh inning but were unable to extend the game as the Tigers won 15-5.

The Tigers travel to Whiting, Ind. for a single nine-inning game on Friday, April 30 against the Crimson Wave of Calumet St. Joe. Friday's game starts at 4 p.m.
