TIGERS WIN BY A COMBINED 19 RUNS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OVER TIU

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University baseball team scored a combined 21 runs in a doubleheader sweep over the Trojans of Trinity International Tuesday afternoon. ONU improves to 17-2 in the conference and extends the longest win streak in the country to 16 games.


GAME ONE: ONU 5, TIU 1

The first game of the series began as a pitcher's duel as both sides remained scoreless for the first three innings. Aren Gustafson went the first six innings giving up only one run, one walk, and striking out three. Jacob Bulthuis broke the scoreless deadlock with an RBI single to right-center field scoring Rod Lucas in the top of the fourth.  

TIU tied the game back up with an RBI single of their own in the fifth inning. Alex Ortiz put the Tigers back in front as he drove in two runs with a single in the sixth. ONU tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh inning to put the ball game out of reach at 5-1. Jonathan Simpson registered the final three outs and his third save of the season. The senior struck out the first two batters and retired the side.


GAME TWO:
ONU 16, TIU 1

ONU's offense exploded for 12 runs in the fourth inning in a route for the second leg of the doubleheader. Robert Jackman led the way at the plate going three-for-four and recording a game-high four RBIs. The New Lennox, Ill. native hit two doubles in a single game for the second time this year.


Kai Hudson cleared the bases with a double that scored three runs. Gunnar Pullins hit his second home run of the season. Eight different Tigers tallied an RBI in the contest with five players batting in multiple.


Matthew Nolin was credited with his third win this spring after pitching four innings allowing four hits, one earned run, and two walks while tying a season-best with four strikeouts. Michael Freitas finished of the remaining three innings that only allowed two base runners via walks. The Purple and Gold finished the regular-season sweep of the Trojans and extended their winning streak to an NAIA-best 16 wins.

The Tigers will begin a three-game series with the Crimson Wave of Calumet St. Joseph's. ONU will travel to Whiting, Ind. to open the series this Friday at 4 p.m. CST.
