Tigers Cruise Past East-West
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University welcomed the East-West University Phantoms and won, 88-64, inside McHie Arena on Saturday afternoon.
At the beginning of the first half, the two teams traded the first 12 points making the score 6-6. At 12-11, Tigers, junior Alex Gross (JR/Hope, Ind.) made four straight free throws and freshman Tyler Schmidt (FR/Valparaiso, Ind. ) marked a layup making the score 18-11. After the Phantoms made a layup, senior CJ Smith (SR/Cumming, Ga.) made a three making the score 21-13. After the Phantoms cut the game to four at 24-20, Gross notched five of the next six points making the score 30-22.
The Tigers held the Phantoms to five more points in the half and were leading 35-25 going into the locker room. Gross led the Tigers with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Senior John Contant (SR/Hickory Hills, Ill.) followed with nine points.
Halftime: Olivet Nazarene 35, East-West 25
The Tigers came out and scored seven straight points to begin the second half making the score 42-25. At the score 44-36, after the Phantoms scored five straight points, Schmidt and Smith combined for the next six Tiger points making the score 50-36. At the score 56-48, the Tigers hit their stride and marked the next 12 points, highlighted by 6 points by Contant and 4 points by Gross, moving the score to 68-47. At the score 78-60, the Schmidt and Contant combined for the next eight points and ONU led 86-60.
The Phantoms notched the final two field goals of the game, but the Tigers topped East-West 88-64.
