Gross Surpasses the 1,000-Point Mark in Road Win Over St. Ambrose

DAVENPORT, Iowa—The Olivet Nazarene University men's basketball concluded its road trip traveling to take on the St. Ambrose University Fighting Bees winning, 67-60, inside Lee Lohman Arena on Wednesday night.

The Tigers and Fighting Bees traded the first 12 points. During that run, CJ Smith (SR/Cumming, Ga.) and John Contant (SR/Hickory Hills, Ill.) knocked down three-pointers. The Tigers then took the lead on two free throws by Alex Gross (JR/Hope, Ind.). With those made free throws, Gross surpassed the 1,000-career point mark, making him the 45th player to accomplish that feat in program history. The rest of the quarter was a back-and-forth affair as neither team could extend a lead past four. After 20 minutes, the Fighting Bees led the Tigers by the slimmest of margins at 34-33.

Halftime: St. Ambrose 34, Olivet Nazarene 33

The beginning of the second half started with Smith and Cade Chitty (JR/White Heath, Ill.) burying field goals making the score 37-34. At the score, 44-43, St. Ambrose, Contant converted an and-on opportunity to making the score 46-44. At the score 55-52, Tigers, Contant and Smith hit three-pointers growing the lead to nine at 61-52, with six minutes left in the game. After the Fighting Bees cut into the Tiger lead scoring the next five points, Gross shifted the momentum back to the Tigers with a layup moving the score to 63-57, with three minutes left. With 15 seconds left in the game, the Fighting Bees attempted a layup, however Gross picked up his fifth block of the game and the Tigers possessed the ball leading, 63-60.

Landon Pflederer (FR/Tremont, Ill.) and Chitty combined to make four free throws to close the game for the Tigers as they defeated the Fighting Bees, 67-60, in this defensive-driven contest.
