TIGERS OUTLAST COUGARS AS G. MANCERA NETS GAME-WINNER IN 2OT

CHICAGO, Ill. – Gustavo Mancera netted the game-winner in double overtime as Olivet Nazarene downed the Saint Xavier University Cougars 3-2 Wednesday night on the road. The Tigers went down 1-0 in the first half to then go up 2-1 in the second but needed a goal in extra time to take three points.

Despite maintaining quality possession and the shot advantage early on, Saint Xavier punished the Tigers on the counter. A shot from distance nestled into the bottom left corner of the net at the 30:49 mark to open the scoring. Benjamin Stuebelt appeared to have found the equalizer in the 34th minute before the assistant referee rose his flag for offside. The best opportunity of the half came just before the break as Max Jasper drove across the top of the 18-yard box and rifled a shot at the Cougars' netminder forcing a save.  SXU held a slight advantage going into the intermission.

Halftime: Saint Xavier 1, Olivet Nazarene 0

The breakthrough came in the 63rd minute as the first-time layoff from Justin Eisenmann put Struebelt in on goal. His finish grazed the right post and into the back of the net to bring both sides level. Eisenmann gave the Tigers their first lead of the match at the 78:00 mark. Fabio Hasler's attempt was parried wide by the Cougar's goalkeeper but not out of danger. The ball fell to the feet of Eisenmann for the close-range finish. With only 48 seconds remaining in regulation, SXU's Ricardo Avalos created and finished the game-tying goal to send the contest to extra time.

End of Regulation: Olivet Nazarene 2, Saint Xavier 2

The game reached the 103rd minute before a ball was dug out in the offensive third of the pitch. It found its way to Gustavo Mancera just outside the penalty area. He took a touch and drove a low and accurate shot into the bottom left corner of the SXU goal to effectively end the match.
