TIGERS' COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST GOVERNORS STATE

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University women's basketball was edged by the Governors State University Jaguars ,82-81, inside McHie Arena on Monday night.

In the first quarter, the Tigers scored 10 of the first 19 points to take a 10-9 lead. During that stretch, senior Ashley Ford (SR/Illiopolis, Ill.) marked four points and junior Maggie Cora (SO/Lizton, Ind.) knocked down the lone three of the first quarter. Both teams played a close rest of the first quarter as neither could lead more than four points. The Jaguars took a 18-17 lead going into the second stanza.

The Jaguars took control at the beginning of the second quarter. At 21-19, Governors State went on a 13-2 run until junior Zanna Myers (JR/Monticello, Ill.) marked a three-pointer making the score 34-25. In the rest of the quarter, the Jaguars distanced themselves, pulling ahead by as much as 15 and took a 49-34 going into the half. Ford and freshman Olivia Demosthenes (FR/Bloomington, Ill.) led the Tigers with six points each.

At the beginning of the third quarter, the Tigers cut into the Jaguar lead. At the score 51-36, The Tigers rattled off nine straight points, spearheaded by field goals from Demosthenes and Myers. Governors State led 51-45. With four minutes left, the Jaguars took control and extended the lead back to 11 at 59-48. Junior guard Kennedy Johnson (JR/Romulus, Mich.) ended the quarter converting an and-one opportunity, but the Tigers trailed 66-56 going into the final quarter.

After the Jaguars jumped out to a 13-point lead at 71-58, the Tigers came roaring back with seven straight points to close the gap to six at 71-65. The Tigers continued to gain some momentum. At the score 76-70, junior Caroline Boehne (JR/Hoffman, Ill.), sophomore Avery Curry (JR/Chicago, Ill. ), and Myers combined with the next seven points to take the lead at 77-76. Boehne then extended the Tiger lead to three with a layup, moving the score to 79-76.

In the last minute-and-a-half, the Jaguars marked six of the last eight points, including hitting the eventual game-winning shot with seven seconds left on the clock to defeat the Tigers, 82-81.
