MEN PLACE FOURTH; WOMEN WIN THE BILL JOHNSON INVITE

KANKAKEE, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University men's and women's golf teams hosted the ONU Bill Johnson Invite over the weekend. The tournament is held in memory of the late Bill Johnson, who was the head women's golf coach and director of golf for ONU for 11 seasons before he passed away in 2021.

 

The women took home the tournament title, finishing seven strokes ahead of St. Ambrose to top the field. The ONU men took fourth overall in the bigger field of 12 teams at the ONU Bill Johnson Invite.

 

The women's meet teed off Friday afternoon with one round at the Kankakee Elks Country Club and was finished up on Saturday with a final 18 holes. Finishing as the tournament runner-up was Lizzie Howard, shooting 83-81 to place just three strokes out of first place. Alexandria Jones and Emily Hayhurst shot an identical 171 to tie for fifth place. In eighth place was Lydia Steier who shot 88-86, while Faith Dalton tied for 14th with a 181 card. Sophie Zerillo carded a 192 to place 21st overall and Mara Bakke and Lauren Fox placed 23rd and 27th, respectively, to wrap up the tournament for the Tigers.

 

The men's 12-team tournament followed the same format as the women's. The top finisher for the Tigers was Jack Bush, who carded 74-76 to end in a five-way tie for 13th. Caleb Stinespring and Jordan Evans tied for 18th, both shooting 75's and 76's to card a 151, just one stroke behind Busch. Kyle Spence turned in a 153 to tie for 23rd to round out the scoring for the Tigers. Sam Nelson shot a 157 to tie for 31st, Cole Cox carded back-to-back 80s to tie for 39th, Hunter Trainor and Colin Elsbree tied for 41st with a 161.

WHAT'S NEXT?

 

The ONU men's team will travel to Silvis, Ill. to play in the NAIA Midwest Invitational at TPC Deere Run on Sept. 26-27, while the women will compete in the Battle at Blackthorn on Sept. 23-24 in Mishawaka, Ind.
