ONU GOLF TEAMS FIRE SECOND ROUND IMPROVEMENTS AT SAINTS CLASSIC

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Second-round improvements highlighted the Olivet Nazarene University men's and women's golf teams' performances at the Saints Classic, the penultimate tournament of the fall season for both squads.

Women's results

Only 14 strokes separated all five of the Tiger golfers on the women's side, with all five improving their second-round performances by multiple strokes. Alexandria Jones was the top scorer for ONU, opening with a 91 before finishing with an 84 on Tuesday to place 23rd. Lizzie Howard finished one stroke behind Jones, firing a 92 on Monday and an identical 84 on day two to earn a tie for 24th place. Lydia Steier and Emily Hayhurst both improved on their scores in Tuesday's second round, with Steier shooting a 180 (93-87) to finish in 26th place and Hayhurst firing a 188 (95-93) to tie for 27th. Mara Bakke fired an 87 on Tuesday, a 15-stroke improvement from the first round, to card a 189 for 29th place finish.

Indiana Wesleyan's Sydney Leyerle claimed individual medalist honors by just two shots, firing a 155 (79-76) to take the tournament's top spot and lead Indiana Wesleyan to the team title.

Men's results

Caleb Stinespring was ONU's leading scorer, opening with an 80 before finishing with a 5-over 77 on Tuesday to earn a tie for 17th place. Just one stroke behind Stinespring was Jordan Evans, firing an 80 on Monday followed by a 6-over 78 on Tuesday for a 20th-place finish. Sam Nelson improved his second-round score by five strokes to finish in a five-way tie for 31st. To wrap up the scoring for the Tigers, Jack Rimington saw a three-stroke improvement on day two to card a 168 (85-82) and tie for 48th place.

Jonah Kumfer of Bethel (Ind.) claimed individual medalist honors by four strokes. He fired an even par 71 on Monday before closing the tournament with a 2-over 73 for a 2-over 144. Indiana Wesleyan claimed the team title.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Tigers will host the CCAC Fall Preview Cup at Cinder Ridge Golf Course in Wilmington, Ill. The one-day tournament will be held Monday, Oct. 10.
