TIGERS SWEEP JAGUARS AT MCHIE ARENA ON THURSDAY NIGHT

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Olivet Nazarene University women's volleyball team welcomed I-57 rival Governors State University to McHie Arena on Thursday night.  The Tigers swept their counterparts in straight sets. 

 

The Tigers started the match taking 6 of the first 10 points of the first set.  Sutton Bate, Carleigh Johnson, and Becca Bell provided the early offense for the Tigers.  Kaitlyn McMahan also picked up an ace during that stretch.  The Tigers and Jaguars found themselves tied at 10 until ONU took over the set.  A kill from Rachel Newport sparked an 8-0 run as the Tigers took a 18-10 lead.  That set the tone for the rest of the set as the Tigers ended up winning the first set, 25-17.

 

Kills by Newport and Bell kicked off the second set for ONU as they took an early 4-0 lead.  After the Jaguars tied the match at seven, the Tigers went on a 7-1 run and led 14-8.  Kills by Janelle Skinner and Anna McGovern as well as a service ace from Karsyn Delbridge led the Tigers during that run. The middle of the set went back-and-forth, but was mainly controlled by the Tigers.  Governors State came within two points at 21-19 until a pair of kills by Katarina Nikolic made the score 24-19.  The Jaguars came back and got within two but a kill by Bate sealed the 25-22 win the second set for the Tigers. 

 

The Tigers got off to a great start in the third set and marked 7 of the first 10 points.  Bell amassed three kills while Delbridge sent over another service ace.  The Jaguars hung in their cutting the lead to 10-7, but four straight points for the Tigers made the score, 14-7. Governors State, again, closed the gap to 16-15, but the Tigers had the answer going on a 4-0 run making the score 20-15.  Bell notched a pair of kills during that stretch. 

 

Bell, Kaitlyn Kolb, and Nikolic each tallied a kill down the stretch as the Tigers were victorious in the third set, 25-19, and took the match, 3-0.

The Tigers compete at the Central Methodist University Triangular on Saturday, October 23rd.  The Tigers play host No. 10 Central Methodist at 3 p.m. and then play No. 18 Columbia (Mo.) at 5 p.m.
