TIGERS FALL TO COUGARS IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
CHICAGO—The Olivet Nazarene University women's volleyball team concluded its regular season with a trip to the Shannon Center to take on the RV Saint Xavier University Cougars.
The two teams traded the first 10 points. A kill by Becca Bell kicked off the offense for the Tigers. The Tigers kept the set close until the Cougars took over. At the score 10-9, Saint Xavier went on a 10-1 run with the only Tiger point coming off the hand of Bell. The Cougars led 20-10. Kills, down the stretch, by Katarina Nikolic was not enough as the Cougars won the first set, 25-15. Saint Xavier hit .471 in the opening set.
Bell and Janelle Skinner kick started the offense for the Tigers in the second set as they took a slim, 5-4, lead. At 10-8, Cougars, the Tigers took advantage of four straight errors from SXU and led 12-10. Then, the Cougars went on a 9-1 run and pulled out in front, 19-13. The Tigers closed the gap as they marked five of the next six points, highlighted by a kill by Bell and a service ace by Kaitlyn McMahan. The Cougars finished the set off after tallied five of the final six points and took the second set, 25-19.
The two teams were tied at four in the early going of the third set. Rachel Newport, Carleigh Johnson, and Bell each tallied a kill. The Cougars then took over and won seven of the next eight points. SXU led, 11-5. After a kill by Newport, the Cougars kept their foot on the gas and extended their lead to 16-6 after scoring the next five points. At 17-7, McMahan served over three straight aces and cut the deficit to 17-11.
Sutton Bate and Anna McGovern provided the offense for the Tigers towards the end of the set, but Saint Xavier won the third set, 25-18, and won the match in straight sets.
