HOT START NOT ENOUGH IN LOSS TO TRINITY CHRISTIAN

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Despite striking first, the Olivet Nazarene University women's volleyball team came out empty-handed in a 25-20, 16-25, 19-25, 21-25 loss to Trinity Christian in McHie Arena Thursday evening.

ONU came out strong, taking the first set in a dominant fashion. A kill from Kelsey Todd followed by back-to-back kills off the hand of Halle Nicholas extended the lead to eight late in the set. A few points later, Molly Kurtz put the Tigers at set point while an ace from Hadleigh Loitz secured the set and the 1-0 advantage.

That proved to be the highlight of the night, however, as the Tigers dropped the second and third sets due to some late runs by Trinity Christian (4-10, 3-1 CCAC) to fall behind 2-1.

But the Tigers had their opportunity in the fourth. Kaylee Cozen hammered down a kill to give ONU a three-point lead early, maintaining that advantage to a 12-9 lead midway through the set. But Trinity Christian pieced together a five-point run to take a lead that they would hold on to for the remainder of the set, taking the match 3-1.

Three Tigers finished in double figures for kills: Sanif and Cozen both led the team with 11, with Nicholas putting down 10. Todd and Kurtz both finished with four kills each. Despite the outcome, ONU put down 46 kills to Trinity Christian's 42.

Loitz led the match with 36 assists. Ashley Poland secured a match-high 18 digs.

ONU will look to pick up their first conference win with a road match at Roosevelt next Tuesday in Chicago, Ill.
